Hi Fiona,The HSE cleaning manual for acute hospitals do not appear to give specific instruction on the cleaning of hospital theatres. My initial response would be no. Operating theatres have 15 to 30 air changes per hour and a controlled air flow system – I would have thought surface washing followed by disinfecting with micro-fibre cloths and micro-fibre flat mops would be the cleaning method of choice as with the correct technique this traps and removes dust & debris.
However if needed, a vacuum machine fitted with a HEPA filter and HEPA bags are required. There is also an H range of vacuum machines available to remove fine particles and hazardous dust. If vacuum machine is necessary I would recommend a time lapse for dust particles to settle, (but how long should this be? I would have to get back to you on that) followed by washing and disinfecting of surfaces. Hope this helps, am interested to read and learn from others… Elizabeth
